Description

*German, WW2, Champagne (ex French Tanker) – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Tanker Champagne. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 19.1cm x12cm

The merchant ship Champagne was originally a French tanker built in 1938 which formed part of a convoy (KJ 3) of merchant ships that departed Kingston, Jamaica on 4 October 1939 that later came under German control. During World War II, it was torpedoed on the 24th Sept 1943 by the British submarine HMS Ultor on her 8th patrol - Champagne was escorted by the German motor minesweeper R 178 off Bastia, Corsica, France. The first attack (at 0349 hours) actually failed and was driven off by R 178 but she was hit twice in the second attack (at 1958 hours) and the damaged tanker was beached. She was torpedoed again and further damaged on the 27th Sept 1943 by HMS Uproar. The torpedo from Uproar hit the engine room and left the Germans no choice then to abandon their salvage attempt.
