*German, WW2, Dated 1939, White Topped Kriegsmarine (Navy) Flat Cap (Tellermütze), with Very Rare U-Boat-826 “Sawfish Badge”*
Size K 55.
This is a rare WWII German Kriegsmarine sailor’s “Donald Duck” hat with a U-Boat Sawfish badge and inside the owners graffiti of a whale and his name, suggesting the sailor was “Meulenbroeks.”
The cap design, known as “Donald Duck,” was widely used globally and worn by Junior NCOs and enlisted men. Made of white cotton with a dark blue wool band, it features a black silk cap tally embroidered with “Kriegsmarine” in yellow thread. The front has a brass national eagle stickpin over a metal tri-color cockade with a grey alloy material eagle. The interior includes the original light brown leather sweatband in good condition. It is stamped 1939 on the brown leather and the size K55 is stamped on the inside of the cap.
The U-boat Sawfish badge, features a Sawfish with its “saw” at a unique 45-degree angle. The sawfish as opposed to the more widely used swordfish was only adopted by both U-106 (Two swordfish with swords pointed upwards and touching to form an “A”) and U-826 and is an extremely rare badge.
U-826, was part of the 11th Flotilla from January to May 1945. It surrendered in Scotland on 11th May 1945 during Operation Deadlight and was sunk in December 1945 for unknown reasons.
The 11th Flotilla, established in May 1942, operated mainly in the North Sea and against PQ convoys. It was reorganized in September 1944, incorporating the first XXI boat, U-2511. The Flotilla’s history ended in May 1945 with Germany’s surrender.
