Description

*German, WW2, Eastern Front Winter “Filzstiefel” Boots by Hoffmann, Kleve, Size 8, Dated 1943*

An excellent and fully original pair of WWII German Eastern Front winter boots (Filzstiefel), manufactured by Hoffmann of Kleve, one of the known wartime suppliers of Wehrmacht footwear. These full-height cold-weather boots combine a heavy blackened leather lower section with thick felt upper shafts, designed to offer insulation during the severe winter campaigns in Russia and other extreme theatres. Both boots retain complete leather straps, iron buckles, heel plates, hobnails, original interior pull-tabs and all period stitching. They remain a perfectly matched pair with consistent patination and wear throughout.

The leather manufacturer labels inside each boot read Hoffmann, Kleve. Stamps include “29½” for shaft height, “8” for size, and “43,” which aligns with late-war production dating. The soles are likewise marked “29½ / 8,” confirming the original pairing. Construction is typical of mid- to late-war Filzstiefel: a robust blackened leather foot section, full felt shafts, double rear leather reinforcement panels with correct stitching, intact leather closures with iron buckles, and internal cotton pull-tabs.

Historical Note:
Following catastrophic frostbite losses during the winter of 1941–42, the Wehrmacht rapidly expanded production of insulated footwear for the Eastern Front. Filzstiefel became the standard cold-weather boot for infantry, artillery and line troops operating in temperatures far beyond the capability of the traditional Marschstiefel. Hoffmann of Kleve was a documented supplier of military footwear during both the interwar period and WWII, and examples with clear maker labels survive only in small numbers. These boots represent a classic and highly recognisable item of Eastern Front equipment—hard-used in period, frequently repurposed after 1945, and now increasingly scarce in this level of completeness.

*Condition*
A very good, service-worthy pair, showing honest signs of field use. The leather foot sections remain supple, with natural creasing and surface wear but no structural weakness. The felt shafts are strong, with some scattered moth tracking consistent with age, but still firm and intact. All leather straps and metal buckles remain original and fully functional. Soles show expected service wear but retain all hobnails and heel plates without repair. Interior pull-tabs remain present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report (NB. The colour of felt is more grey than brown - the close ups are the best match)
