*German, WW2, M40 Heer Combat Helmet, Single Decal, Lot Number 865*
This is an original German Model 1940 (M40) steel combat helmet, issued to Wehrmacht (Heer) forces during the Second World War. The M40 helmet retained the familiar profile of its predecessor, the M35, but introduced stamped ventilation holes for more efficient production. This example features one visible decal on the left-hand side—a heavily worn Heer eagle, consistent with helmets issued after the national tricolour decal was phased out in 1940.
Stamped with lot number 865 on the rear interior skirt, the helmet is a solid example of wartime German manufacture. Though the maker mark is not visible, the construction and lot placement are consistent with known M40 production practices. The shell retains its original shape with no major warping or damage beyond some surface corrosion.
The liner and chinstrap are no longer present, and the surface shows a heavy, even layer of rust and patina from age and exposure—typical of a battlefield find. Close inspection of the decal area reveals remnants of the eagle’s wings and shield design beneath the oxidised finish.
*Condition*
The helmet has some rust and corrosion across all surfaces. The original factory paint is mostly gone, though traces may remain under the patina. The Heer decal is faint but discernible. Liner, chinstrap, and all interior fittings are missing. The shell remains structurally sound with no cracks or large dents. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
