This pair of Carl Zeiss U-boat binoculars, marked “blc,” demonstrates the vital role of precision optics in naval warfare during World War II. Manufactured by the esteemed Carl Zeiss Jena, these binoculars combine optical brilliance with German engineering excellence. 7×50 binoculars were frequently used on the submarines during WW2, because on a small ship the higher magnification of the binocular the harder it was to use in rough weather. The 7×50’s with a large depth of focus needed very little focusing adjustment either for distance or individuals making them well suited to the submarine environment. They also fitted naturally into the hands of sailors as they were often wearing gloves.
Their specialized construction, including features like rubber eyecups to shield from saltwater spray, showcases the attention to detail required for maritime operations.
