Description

*German, WW2, Third Reich Luftwaffe 2nd Pattern Officer’s Dagger, Complete with Scabbard*

An original Luftwaffe 2nd Pattern officer’s dagger, retaining its matching scabbard and presenting as a clean, well-preserved example of this classic Third Reich edged weapon. The dagger displays the characteristic fittings of the pattern, including the cast aluminium hilt with integral eagle crossguard clutching a swastika, and the distinctive cream-coloured grip bound with twisted wire.

The pommel cap features the Luftwaffe sunwheel swastika within a wreath, with good definition remaining to the detailing. The grip appears to be celluloid or similar composite, showing an attractive aged tone with minor surface marks consistent with service and age. The twisted wire wrap remains intact and tight.

The blade measures approximately 24 cm, with an overall length of 38.4 cm. It is bright and clean, retaining a good finish with only light surface marks visible on close inspection. As noted, the blade is unmarked, which is not uncommon on these daggers, as a number of Solingen manufacturers supplied blades both marked and unmarked depending on contract and production period.

The scabbard is the standard pebbled aluminium type with oakleaf-decorated bands and suspension rings. It remains straight and structurally sound, with an even patina and no major dents. The throat and fittings are secure, and the dagger seats correctly.

History Note:
The Luftwaffe 2nd Pattern dagger was introduced in 1937, replacing the earlier 1st Pattern model. It remained in use throughout the Second World War as the standard dress sidearm for Luftwaffe officers. Manufacture was undertaken by a wide range of Solingen firms, and unmarked examples such as this are encountered within known production.

*Condition*
Very good overall. The blade is clean with light age-related marks only. The grip shows minor wear and small marks but remains structurally sound with intact wire. Metal fittings retain good detail with light patina. The scabbard is straight with no significant damage, showing typical wear consistent with age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
