An original German Third Reich SA (Sturmabteilung) Model 1933 Honour Dagger, manufactured during the late 1930s or early years of the Second World War by Arthur Schüttelhöfer & Co., Solingen, as identified by the RZM M7/13 maker's code stamped to the ricasso. The introduction of RZM codes in place of full maker trademarks reflects the standardised production of later-period examples.
The polished double-edged blade is etched with the SA motto "Alles für Deutschland" ("Everything for Germany") and retains a pleasing bright finish with age-related staining, scattered spotting and light surface marks consistent with careful handling over the years.
The hilt is fitted with its original brown stained wooden grip inset with the SA enamel roundel and nickel-plated national eagle. The nickel-plated crossguards display attractive age-related patination and honest wear, complementing the dagger's original appearance.
The dagger is housed in its original brown anodised steel scabbard with matching plated mounts and retains its original leather hanger. The metal fittings are stamped RZM M5/71, identifying manufacture by Overhoff & Cie. of Lüdenscheid, one of the principal Reichszeugmeisterei contractors for political uniform hardware. The presence of the correct RZM-marked hanger enhances the originality and completeness of this increasingly sought-after collector's piece.
History Note:
The SA (Sturmabteilung), commonly known as the Brownshirts, adopted the Model 1933 dagger as its official dress and ceremonial sidearm. Inspired by Renaissance hunting daggers, it became one of the most recognisable edged weapons of the Third Reich period.
Early production examples carried full maker trademarks, while later daggers adopted the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) coding system to regulate manufacture and quality control. The RZM M7/13 code identifies production by Arthur Schüttelhöfer & Co. of Solingen, while the RZM M5/71 mark on the hanger fittings denotes manufacture by Overhoff & Cie. of Lüdenscheid, a major supplier of official NSDAP metal fittings, belt hardware and dagger accessories. The matching period-correct hanger contributes to the historical integrity and collectability of the ensemble.
*Condition*
The dagger remains in good original condition commensurate with age. The blade retains its original etched motto and maker markings, showing scattered staining, light spotting and surface scratches from age and handling. The wooden grip is free from significant damage, retaining both the SA enamel insignia and eagle emblem securely in place. The plated hilt mounts display honest age-related wear and patination. The original anodised scabbard exhibits expected finish wear, scratches and small areas of oxidation but remains structurally sound. The accompanying leather hanger shows age-related wear and remains fitted with its original RZM-marked metal fittings.
