~ Hefty Model Of RML Armstrong Naval Gun Table Gong ~
This was used as a table gong at the Officers mess within the British Royal Navy barracks at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth.
The gong is made from a 6 inch brass shell case suspended by a large, solid brass model of a RML (Rifled Muzzle Loading) Armstrong gun. Similar weapons were fitted at Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill.
The piece has been nicely mounted on a wooden base.
The pierced inert cartridge case has two broad arrows and the letter N to denote its naval use on the primer section.
The gong strike is in the form of a ramrod.
~ Dimensions ~
The base measures 20 inches (51cm) long by 12 inches (30cm)wide. The piece is approximately 23 inches (58cm) tall. The piece is approximately 24kg.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in very good condition. The wooden base has some light wear but the metalwork is overall fine. There is as small crack to the brass on the edge of the shell.
