Description

~ HMS Tactician Ships Mess Room Badge - 1942 T Class Submarine ~

The crest is of cast aluminium construction and has a white chess knight horse on a black background.

It belonged to a Royal Navy submariner who served between 1961 and 1979 and would have come from the submarines mess. His period of service ties in with the last years of Tacticians service career. It is not a copy.

There are 3 fixing screws holes to the reverse with one screw present.

~ HMS Tactician ~

HMS Tactician was a British submarine of the third group of the T class. She was built as P314 by Vickers-Armstrongs, Barrow, and launched on 29 July 1942.

Tactician served in the Mediterranean and the Far East during her wartime career. Whilst operating against the Italians, she sank the Italian auxiliary patrol vessel V17 / Pia and the Italian sailing vessel Bice. She also torpedoed and damaged the Italian merchant Rosandra off the coast of Albania. The ship sank the following day.

On being transferred to the Pacific, she continued to harass enemy shipping, sinking a small Japanese vessel and two Siamese sailing vessels before the end of the war. She took part in Operation Cockpit, where she rescued a downed airman under fire.

Tactician survived the war and continued in service with the navy, finally being scrapped at Newport on 6 December 1963.

~ Dimensions ~

This crest is 8.7 inches (22.4 cm) tall with a diameter of 6.7 inches (16.8 cm). The crest weighs 850 g.

~ Condition ~

The crest is slightly worn, with some paint chipping and general wear from age. The crest was gold gilded in the past, only traces now remain.
