Description

*Hungary, WW1 - Instituted 1929, Hungarian World War I Commemorative Medal (Magyar Háborús Emlékérem), Combatant Type*

A Hungarian World War I Commemorative Medal (Magyar Háborús Emlékérem), instituted in 1929 by Regent Admiral Miklós Horthy to honour those who served Hungary during the First World War of 1914–1918.

The circular medal is struck in silvered bronze (or similar alloy) and displays on the obverse the crowned Hungarian coat of arms placed over crossed swords, surrounded by a wreath composed of oak and laurel leaves symbolising strength and victory. The crowned shield shows the traditional Hungarian heraldic elements including the Árpád stripes and the Patriarchal Cross. The reverse bears the Latin inscription “PRO DEO ET PATRIA” (“For God and Country”) above a steel helmet and the dates 1914–1918, framed by a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon bow below.

The medal is suspended from the distinctive triangular Austrian-style ribbon, in Hungarian national colours of green, white, and red. The example shown retains its original ribbon mounting.

This example represents the combatant version, identifiable by the crossed swords motif associated with front-line military service.

Approx. Measurements – Medal diameter: approx. 36 mm.

History Note:
Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after the First World War, Hungary sought to formally recognise the service of its veterans. In 1929 Regent Admiral Miklós Horthy instituted the Hungarian Commemorative War Medal to honour those who had participated in the conflict between 1914 and 1918.

The decoration was issued in several variants for combatants, non-combatants, and next-of-kin of those killed in action. It was awarded not only to Hungarian veterans but also to individuals from allied nations who had fought alongside Hungarian forces during the war.

Although commemorating wartime service, the medal itself is an inter-war issue, dating from the late 1920s onwards.

*Condition*
The medal remains in good overall condition with clear definition to the struck details. The silvered finish shows light age toning and minor surface marks consistent with age and handling. The ribbon remains intact with some light wear and minor fraying at the fold. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
