*Imperial German, WW1, Bavarian Officer’s Pickelhaube Stein Lid, with Eagle Thumb-Lift, Marked “BG” and “Wx”*
A finely cast and entirely original WWI-period Bavarian officer’s regimental stein lid, modelled as a miniature Pickelhaube (spiked helmet). Constructed in pewter, the domed helmet retains its spike finial, front visor, and hinged chinstrap formed as scalloped officer’s scales with circular bosses. The frontal plate depicts the crowned Bavarian arms superimposed on the Imperial double-headed eagle, bearing the motto “In Treue Fest” (“Steadfast in Loyalty”).
The lid is fitted with a cast bronze eagle thumb-lift perched upon a globe, attached by a well-engineered hinged bracket. The hinge arms are clearly stamped “BG” and “Wx”, presumed to denote subcontracted pewter or hinge workshop codes associated with Bavarian or Thuringian production. The interior displays original lathe marks and traces of the period tinning typical of quality pewter fittings.
Measurements: Helmet portion approx. 9.4 cm long × 7.9 cm wide × 7.0 cm tall; total width including bent hinge 13 cm (14.5 cm when hinge laid flat).
Historical Note:
During the late Imperial period, Bavarian officer regimental steins were often crowned with elaborate lids symbolising rank and allegiance. Officer-grade examples like this—featuring a full Pickelhaube form—were typically commissioned to commemorate service or retirement within the Royal Bavarian Army. The Pickelhaube lid was a mark of pride, reflecting Bavaria’s distinct identity within the German Empire and the steadfast loyalty of its officers, encapsulated by the national motto “In Treue Fest.” Lids of this type were produced by leading pewter workshops in Munich, Coburg, and Thuringia, such as Merkelbach & Wick and Hauber & Reuther, between about 1900 and 1918.
*Condition*
Very good, original condition throughout. Pewter surfaces show a pleasing aged patina with light oxidation consistent with age. Minor wear to the eagle thumb-lift and crest highlights. Hinge tight and fully functional; visor strap intact and moves freely. No repairs or losses. Interior with scattered marks and traces of original tinning.
