Description

*Imperial German, WWI, M1898/05 n.A. “Butcher” Bayonet & Scabbard for Mauser Gew.98, Solingen-Marked (Relic Condition)*

Imperial German World War I Seitengewehr 98/05 n.A. (neuer Art) sword bayonet, commonly referred to as the “Butcher” bayonet, for the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle. This is the correct second pattern (n.A.) example, fitted with the steel flash guard (Flammenblech) and lacking the earlier high muzzle ears of the first (a.A.) type. The hooked quillon has been broken off, a common occurrence on trench-used or later de-horned bayonets.

The blade retains its correct heavy butcher profile with central fuller, now showing extensive pitting and corrosion consistent with long-term storage or ground recovery. Wooden grip slabs remain in place, secured by steel rivets, with heavy wear, cracking, and surface loss commensurate with relic condition. Steel hilt components display deep oxidation throughout.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 36.4 cm. Overall length: 49.7 cm.

Historical Note:
The S.98/05 pattern was introduced to replace the earlier long and slender S.98 “quillback” bayonet, which proved impractical under trench warfare conditions. Its broad, reinforced blade offered increased durability for bayonet fighting, utility tasks, and general service use in the close and demanding conditions of the Western Front.

The n.A. (neuer Art) modification, introduced from late 1915, incorporated the flash guard to protect the soldier’s hand from muzzle blast and eliminated earlier muzzle features, resulting in a stronger and more streamlined fighting bayonet. This pattern was widely issued to infantry, machine-gun units, and pioneer troops throughout the latter half of the war.

The ricasso bears a partially legible maker’s mark, with “SOLINGEN” clearly visible beneath a heavily worn upper line. Although corrosion prevents full attribution, the surviving layout and letter remnants are consistent with Solingen trade production, most likely by F. W. Höller, whose markings commonly appear in this two-line format. Absolute identification is precluded by surface loss.

*Condition*
Relic condition throughout. Blade heavily pitted with loss of surface finish; no active edge. Hooked quillon broken off. Hilt and pommel deeply oxidised. Grip slabs heavily worn with cracking and surface loss but remaining intact. All corrosion and wear consistent with age and service. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
