Description

*Imperial Germany, WW1, Model 1915 Prussian Infantry Pickelhaube, Pressed Felt Body (Ersatz type), Brass Fittings*

A fine and original Imperial German Ersatz Model 1915 Prussian Pickelhaube, produced in pressed in pressed olive-drab felt with matching brass fittings. The helmet retains its ventilated spike and domed baseplate, fixed by the correct internal circular reinforcing disc with folded metal tabs. The large front plate (Wappen) bears the crowned Prussian eagle with motto “MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND” and central “FR” cipher, holding orb and sceptre — complete and undamaged. Both the national and Prussian cockades remain fitted to their original brass posts, showing traces of period enamel in red, white, black and blue. The rough-tan leather chinstrap is present and complete.

The felt shell retains excellent form with only minor age wear and surface speckling. Internally, the original brown leather liner survives in fragmentary but untouched condition, consistent with age and material fragility.

Historical Note:
By mid-1915, Germany faced critical shortages of leather and metal for equipment manufacture. As a result, Ersatz (substitute) helmets such as this were introduced, made from compressed felt or fibreboard while retaining the familiar spiked silhouette of the traditional Pickelhaube. Olive-drab felt versions like this example were especially common among late-war Prussian infantry units and offered better camouflage in the field. Despite their simplified construction, they preserved the Imperial symbols of loyalty to Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Prussian state.

*Condition*
Externally very good for a wartime felt example, with firm body, clean patina to brass fittings, and well-preserved cockades. Minor deformation to one wing of the eagle plate. Interior liner largely perished and extremely delicate but original. Chin strap is present but fragile. All fittings appear period and undisturbed. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
