~ Large 19th Century Royal Navy Cordite Carrier Large Canister ~
From the time of the Napoleonic wars Royal Navy used hard leather canister to carry gun powder for its cannons.
Beside the easiness of it being carried from down bellow to the upper decks, the powder was also safe from fire in case that the canister will be dropped for any reason. These canisters will continue to be used well into the 19th century.
Our piece bears the Royal coat of arms on one side, has a brown leather carrying handle and a leather lid hinged on one side, going all the way to the top, so it can be carried in hand (or by shorter people, children being usually the ones carrying them).
The bottom is lined on the outside with military type canvas.
It would make a great unmbrella stand.
~ Dimensions ~
The canister stands 22 inches (56 cm) tall with a diameter of 13 inches (33 cm).
It weighs 4.85 Kg
~ Condition ~
The canister remains in good condition for its age.
The coat of arms is worn but still visible.
The leather hinge of the lid is broken and a small section of leather is missing.
The canvas underneath has one side unglued.
