Description

~ Late 19th Century Gold Folding Lorgnettes No. 2 ~

The Lorgnette was a craze in the 19th century, not only an optical device but a fashion statement.

The Lorgnette was invented in 1818 by the French optician Lepage and quickly became a sought after fashion accessory.

What we have here is what seems to be a design very prevalent towards the mid to late 19th century, with a soft spring trigger mechanism for releasing the lenses.

The trigger mechanism still works and pushes the catch outwards so the lenses can be released.

There are no markings but from the style it can be assumed that this gold lorgnette was made in France. It acid tests as 9ct gold or higher.

~ Dimensions ~

The set is 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) long by 0.9 of an inch (2 cm) wide.

The set weighs 25 grams.

~ Condition ~

The set is in good condition for its age.

The trigger mechanism still works.

The spectacles fold out but can get caught.

The lenses are free in good condition for their age.

The lenses central pin is loose.
