A fine antique walking stick featuring a large hand-painted porcelain ball handle in deep cobalt blue with gilt decoration. The crown of the handle is delicately painted with a romantic courting couple in a garden setting, while the shaft bears a further hand-painted porcelain panel depicting a gentleman and lady in Georgian dress. Both sections are mounted with richly embossed gilt metal collars, the upper collar engraved with the initials R.E.A.J.. The stick is mounted on a stained hardwood shaft, tapering to a dark cow horn ferrule. Length: 92 cm

Walking sticks of this type emerged as both stylish accessories and practical aids during the 19th century. The use of hand-painted porcelain panels with gilt mounts reflects fine continental craftsmanship, most likely French or Austrian, drawing on the Rococo revival taste for 18th-century pastoral and courting scenes. The rich cobalt ground, highlighted with gilding and romantic figures, is closely associated with the Sèvres and Vienna styles that were especially fashionable in the late Victorian period, around 1880–1900. The engraved initials to the collar suggest this example was commissioned or presented as a gift.

The porcelain handle and panel remain vibrant with only minor surface wear consistent with age. Gilt mounts show some rubbing but retain good definition to the chased decoration. The hardwood shaft is well-preserved with a glossy finish. The horn ferrule shows wear to the base commensurate with use. Overall a very attractive and well-preserved example.
