Description

*Late Victorian, Bamboo Antique Crook-Handled Walking Cane with Root-Ball “Snake Head” Handle*

A late Victorian to early Edwardian bamboo walking cane, measuring approximately 96.5 cm in length, formed from a single length of bamboo with a gently heat-bent crook handle. The terminal is fashioned from a carefully selected bamboo root ball, deliberately shaped and polished to suggest the head of a snake, with natural growth rings, voids, and surface features giving the piece a clear zoomorphic character rather than a purely organic root termination. The shaft retains clearly defined bamboo nodes and its original surface finish, now attractively darkened through age and handling. A plain brass ferrule remains fitted to the tip.

An expressive and characterful example of a late Victorian cane, combining natural material with intentional figurative design.

Historical Note:
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bamboo walking sticks became highly fashionable in Britain and Europe, particularly those incorporating exotic or novelty elements. Cane makers deliberately selected bamboo root stock with strong natural character, often enhancing it through subtle shaping and polishing to suggest animal or grotesque forms such as snakes, dogs, or mythical creatures.

Snake-form canes were especially popular, drawing on contemporary fascination with the exotic, the Orient, and natural history. These sticks were sold through outfitters, cane specialists, and curiosity dealers, appealing to gentlemen travellers, country walkers, and collectors seeking something distinctive yet functional.

*Condition*
The walking stick is structurally sound, with no breaks or repairs. The bamboo shaft shows expected age-related wear, surface abrasions, shrinkage cracks, and losses to the original finish, consistent with prolonged use. The root-ball handle displays natural wormholes, surface fissures, and irregularities inherent to the material, all commensurate with age and intentionally retained as part of the design. The metal ferrule is well worn and patinated but remains securely attached. Overall, the cane retains strong original character and honest period patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
