~ History of W3999/RB-Y ~
The impressive Sunderland flying boats of RAF Coastal Command during World War II played a crucial role in safeguarding Britain’s sea routes from enemy threats. Despite enduring long, grueling patrols, they often risked their lives to rescue downed airmen. On June 21, 1942, Sunderland W3999’s crew took off from RAF Mount Batten to search for the crew of a ditched Coastal Command No.172 Squadron Vickers Wellington. In the search area, the Sunderland, accompanied by a Whitley patrol aircraft, faced an attack from a German Arado Ar196 float plane, resulting in damage. The flying boat managed to land on the sea but sadly exploded and sank. The Whitley took evasive action and eventually returned home, confirming no survivors from this tragic incident.
