Description

*Mid-20th Century, Naval Battleship Desk Ashtray & Lighter, Cannon Spark Action*

An unusual and highly decorative mid-20th-century novelty desk ashtray with integrated lighter, cast in the form of a stylised naval battleship. The piece is executed in silver-tone metal and modelled with exaggerated Art-Deco–influenced lines, featuring a raised superstructure, stepped conning tower, twin funnels, deck guns, and turrets.

The most appealing feature is the ingenious mechanical interaction: when the forward cannon is depressed, it actuates the lighter mechanism, producing a spark as if the gun has been fired. This charming novelty function is both theatrical and well engineered. The lighter unit is removable, and the ashtray body lifts apart to reveal an internal compartment designed for storing cigarettes, a feature seen on comparable period examples.

Unmarked, as is typical for novelty desk accessories of this type, and closely related in form and construction to documented military ship table lighters of the 1930s–1950s period.

Approximate Measurements: Length: 24.8 cm. Width: 14.3 cm. Height: 12 cm

Historical Note:
Figural ashtrays and combination desk accessories were popular from the inter-war period through the post-war years, particularly examples incorporating movement or mechanical surprise elements. Naval and military themes were especially favoured, reflecting contemporary fascination with modern warfare, engineering, and maritime power.

*Condition*
Overall in good vintage condition, with honest wear consistent with age and use. The metal surfaces show light surface marks, small areas of pitting, and gentle rubbing throughout. The lighter produces a spark when operated (fuel not tested). The rear turret has been repaired and now sits securely in place. No cracks or structural issues to the main body. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Charming mid-century battleship desk ashtray and lighter with firing cannon spark action and internal cigarette storage.
