Muntz metal is a form of alpha-beta brass with about 60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron. Commercialised after 1832, Muntz Metal was adopt for its performance in salt water and notably used in the construction of the Cutty Sark. It would be assumed that this mental spike was added to the HMS Victory during the mid 19th Century while the warship was opened up to the public for viewing.
*Condition*
As you would expect, the spike contains evidence of its past working life. The dents and bends add to its charm as a fantastic piece of history. The wooden board and velvet are in very good condition. Please refer to the images as a part of our condition report.
