Description

"Original Framed Print by Colonel P.H Smitherman, "Major, 6th Dragoon Guards, 1818", c1962".

This sought after print was originally published in 1962 by © Hugh Evelyn and drawn by Colonel Philip Henry Smitherman, Royal Corps of Signals (1910-1982), a renowned military artist.

Established in 1685 as the Queen Dowager’s Cuirassiers against Monmouth, the 6th became the King’s Carabiniers in 1691 and later transformed into the 6th Dragoon Guards (The Carabiniers) in 1788. Initially issued carbines in 1680, they retained the Carabiniers title despite surrendering the weapons. In 1851, they adopted a distinctive blue uniform, differing from other Dragoon Guards. The 6th amalgamated with the 3rd Dragoon Guards in 1922, forming the 3rd Carabiniers, now the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys). The officer's dress reflects that of a heavy cavalryman post-Napoleonic wars, featuring a French-origin helmet with a horsehair tuft, a crimson and gold sash, and a heavy sabre, albeit less favored than the light cavalry sword.

Framed: 355mmx287mm

*Condition*
Some slight foxing, this print is in a generally good order. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
