~ Post 1902 Spiked Officers Black Cloth Spikehelmet & Tin Hat Box General Service ~
The helmet, made from black cloth, has the applied brass badge of the Royal Coat of Arms to the front. The chain link & chin strap is present. The interior is stamped with the Hawkes & Co. logo.
The item also comes with an original Hawkes & Co. tin hat box. The front has two plaques: an applied plaque that reads ‘Major F.J.Denham, East Lancashire Regiment’ and a Hawkes & Co. plaque.
I purchased the items together so I can only assume that, being of the same manufacturer, Denham served in both the East Lancashire regiment and the General Service.
~ Dimensions ~
The helmet is 8 inches (20.25cm) tall (without the spike) and 11.5 inches (29.25cm) tall (with the spike). The depth of the helmet is 10 inches (25.5cm) and it has a width of 7 inches (17.75cm). The set weighs weighs 1.7 kg.
~ Condition ~
The helmet is in very good condition, it is complete with its lining and chinstap. There are 4 moth nips to the cloth. The chin scales are becoming detached from the felt backing at one end. The tin is fairly worn, rusted and cannot be shut correctly.
