A scarce and desirable example of a GDR (German Democratic Republic)-issue AKM Type I bayonet, designed for use with East Germany’s MPi-KM rifles — a licensed variant of the Soviet AK47 Kalashnikov.

This bayonet features the classic clip-point sawback blade, black moulded grip slabs, and the signature oblong slot near the tip, designed to pair with its scabbard’s wire cutter lug. Blade measures approximately 14.5cm, with an overall length of 27.5cm.

What distinguishes this example is the electro-penciled serial number “2298” in the mounting groove — consistent with standard GDR military marking practices. There are no other blade or ricasso stamps, which is correct for DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) production.

The bayonet is housed in its original black composite scabbard, complete with a rubber insulator moulded with the number “5998” — identifying the GDR mould variant, not a serial number. The scabbard pairs securely with the blade for wire-cutting use.

Included is the rare grey polymer belt hanger, issued in small numbers and far less common than the typical black leather or canvas frogs used by the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA). The grey hanger retains its steel clip and loop and is in very good condition.

Overall very good, service-issued condition. Blade shows honest wear with some light surface marks. Grips are clean and secure with no cracks. Scabbard is complete and functional, with minor scuffing. The rare grey polymer hanger is intact, making this a particularly collectible configuration. The electro-penciled serial number “2298” remains sharp and legible.
