*Rare, Original, British RAF, 1968, Phantom 11 Badge*
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II served as a key combat aircraft in the United Kingdom from 1968 to 1992, marking the UK as the first export customer for the Phantom. Used by both the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force, it fulfilled roles like air defense, close air support, low-level strike, and tactical reconnaissance. While initially assembled in the U.S., the UK’s early Phantoms were a unique batch incorporating significant British technology, supporting the domestic aerospace industry.
The F-4 Phantom II, originally developed for the U.S. Navy, evolved into a versatile tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber. Beginning deliveries in 1961, it became a prominent asset, with 29 Navy and Marine squadrons flying it by 1966. Initially designed for interception and air superiority, its role expanded during Vietnam, emphasizing secondary strike capabilities with a variety of external stores. Production spanned from 1958 to 1981, resulting in 5,195 aircraft and solidifying its status as the most produced American supersonic military aircraft, emblematic of the Cold War era.
