Description
*Romania, Cold War - Dated 1987, Romanian People’s Army Wool Service Tunic, I.C.R.M. Sărat Factory, Socialist Republic Buttons, Size 44*
An original Cold War period Romanian People’s Army wool service tunic, manufactured in 1987 and retaining its original internal factory and inspection markings. The tunic follows the standard Romanian military four-pocket service pattern widely issued during the later decades of the communist era.
Constructed from heavy olive-green wool, the tunic features a concealed front button closure which gives the garment a clean and practical service appearance. Two pleated breast pockets with buttoned flaps are present together with two lower hip pockets. The tunic retains its original metal buttons bearing the coat of arms of the Socialist Republic of Romania, depicting the Carpathian mountains, industrial tower and rising sun within a wreath of wheat. Buttoned shoulder epaulettes are fitted for removable rank boards, and the garment is tailored with structured shoulders and a slightly fitted waist typical of Romanian service dress uniforms of the period.
Internally the tunic retains its original black ink factory stamp applied to the lining. The stamp reads “I.C.R.M. SĂRAT / TALIE – GROS 44 II / AN CONF. 1987 / C.T.C.” This identifies manufacture by the clothing enterprise at Râmnicu Sărat, one of the Romanian state factories responsible for producing military uniforms during the socialist period. The marking “TALIE – GROS 44 II” represents the Romanian military sizing system, indicating chest size 44 with height group II. The marking “AN CONF. 1987” denotes the year of manufacture, while the circular C.T.C. (Controlul Tehnic de Calitate) inspection mark confirms the garment passed official Romanian state technical quality inspection prior to acceptance.
Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 42.5 cm. Sleeve length: 65 cm. Overall length: 75 cm.
History Note:
During the Cold War the Romanian People’s Army (Armata Republicii Socialiste România) formed a major component of the Warsaw Pact military system. Throughout the 1960s–1980s the Romanian armed forces maintained large ground forces equipped with domestically produced uniforms and equipment manufactured by state textile enterprises.
Factories such as the clothing combine at Râmnicu Sărat produced a wide range of military garments including service tunics, greatcoats and field uniforms. Wool service tunics of this type were standard issue across the Romanian Army for garrison duties, ceremonial wear and everyday service during the later communist period under Nicolae Ceaușescu. With a manufacture date of 1987, this tunic was produced only two years before the collapse of the Socialist Republic of Romania in the 1989 revolution, placing it among the final generation of uniforms issued to the Romanian People’s Army before the end of the communist era.
*Condition*
Service-worn example showing light wear consistent with age and use. The wool cloth remains structurally sound with good colour retention. Original Socialist Republic pattern buttons remain present and the internal factory stamp remains visible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
