Description

*Scottish, Victorian, Bandsmans or Pipers Dirk, Silver Mounted with Scabbard, Tassel and Belt Loop. Made in London.*

A unique and very collectable Silver-mounted Victorian dirk. Silver pommel and nut, magnificent geometrically carved with a Celtic weave pattern,  studded wooden grip with 18 silver studs and silver oval cross guard. Single edged blade with short top fuller. Decorative leather covered scabbard with cross hatched pattern with silver throat, silver embellishments, a wonderful head holding the decorative tassel and on the reverse a decorative leaf holding the belt loop and a silver chape. The red tassel has a silver top which is embellished with a looping dragon/serpent.

Silver marks on pommel "MW" in a rectangle, London (uncrowned leopard), Lion Passant. Marked on cross guard with the Lion Passant and an indiscernible date mark. Marked on the scabbard with the Lion Passant on the throat, the chape, on the belt strap ring and on the belt strap leaf decoration, which is also marked with maker or sponsors mark "J&Co", and a date stamp which may be an O or C.

Measures approximately 24cm blade 36.5cm overall.

*Condition*
This dirk is in excellent used condition. The scabbard is in good condition with some wear and tear to the throat and leather and very minor dents to the chape. The scabbard and dirk fit together securely. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
