~ Set Of 3 Monogrammed Georgian Silver Spoons ~
These 3 large dessert spoons, are all monogrammed identically with a capital letter “W” in a beautiful filigree script.
Whilst identical in design, the hallmarks reveal 2 different London makers and 3 different dates, indicating perhaps that these were items commissioned for either a wealthy family, or perhaps more likely, a long serving hotel or restaurant.
On the oldest of the three, we have the earliest marks for George Wintle, the Lion Rampant (the British standard), a crowned leopard (indicating London), the initial “n” (indicating the date 1788) and the King’s head (George III).
On the other two, we have the makers’ mark “SR IED” which are for the Solomon Royes & John Dix partnership, the Lion Rampant, a crowned leopard and the initials “b” on one and “c” on the other (indicating the dates 1817 and 1818 respectively). These spoons also have a mark of George III’s head.
~ Dimensions ~
The 3 spoons have identical dimensions, they are all 8.75 inches (22 cm) long.
They’re 2.25 inches (5.5 cm) wide, and they each weigh 60 grams.
~ Condition ~
These items are as robust as they are elegant and show minimal wear despite their age and use.
The handles are straight, the monograms (and hallmarks) are clear.
The oldest of the 3 spoons has the very slightest wear on one small (1cm) portion of the lip of its bowl, this is difficult to detect by sight, as our photographs will attest.
