Here we have a set of medals awarded to a merchant who served during the Great War.
The British War Medal, struck by the Royal Mint, is a bronze disk showing King George V facing left on the obverse, while the reverse shows St George naked on horseback, armed with a short sword. The horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross-bones.
The Mercantile Marine War Medal is a disk, struck in bronze and was awarded to the seafaring merchants who operated at the risk of their lives and the lives of their fleet. The obverse is identical to that of the British War Medal while the reverse shows a merchant steamship ploughing through heavy seas, with an enemy submarine sinking on portside and a sailing ship in the background.
Both come with their ribbons and the recipient’s name “WILLIAM P. DAVIES” is impressed on each rim.
