~ Signed Robert Browning Letter Relating To His Publisher 1872 Plus Two Books ‘Poems’ 1849 ~
A handwritten and signed letter by Robert Browning to his publishers ‘Tauchnitz Publishers’. The letter was sent from St Aubin Sur Mer., Calvados on the 24th August 1872.
St Aubin sur mer incidentally is where Robert Browning wrote ‘Red Cotton Night-Cap Country, or Turf and Towers’ which was set in St Aubin Sur Mer and published less than a year after this letter was written so we can presume he was writing this at the time.
The letter mentions his publisher Baron Tauchnitz by name.
The letter reads as follows:
“Dear Sir,
Will you have the kindness to send, in conformity with the permission of Baron Tauchnitz, twelve copies of the poem to my address – 19 Warwick Crescent, Upper Westbourne Terrace, W.
Yours obediently
Robert Browning.”
The letter comes with a postcard of a boy and his dog outside a cottage, the origins of which are not known and with two volumes of Robert Browning books ‘Poems’ from 1849 which is a collection on unpublished and out of print poems.
‘Poems by Robert Browning. In two volumes. A new edition. London Chapman & Hall, 186, Strand 1849’.
The books are hardback originals, later rebound.
~ Dimensions ~
The letter is on a single piece of plain white paper measuring 4 ½ inches (11.5cm) by 4 inches (10cm).
The books both measure 7 inches (18cm) by 4 ½ inches (11.5cm) by 1 inch (2.5cm).
Altogether the set weighs 816g.
~ Condition ~
The letter is in great condition. It has fold marks and some foxing, mainly to the reverse but has been well looked after. There is a later penned annotation to the lower left corner with his year of birth and death.
The books are also in very good condition although they have been rebound at some point.
