Description

~ Staffordshire Pearlware Mug Of Father Neptune (Shorter & Sons, Ltd), circa 1940-1946 ~

A characterful and vibrantly hand-painted Staffordshire character mug in the form of Father Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, produced by Shorter & Son Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent. The mug is modelled as a bearded Neptune wearing a purple crown populated with sea creatures — a golden fish, a teal starfish, and further marine details to the reverse — his face painted with bold flesh tones, blue eyes, and a flowing grey-and-black beard that forms the body of the vessel. The handle is formed as a naturalistically modelled and coloured green seahorse, a defining feature of the Shorter Neptune range. The interior and rim are glazed in a clean off-white cream. The base carries the impressed and printed mark: Father Neptune / Genuine Staffordshire / Hand Painted / Shorter & Son Ltd / England, with the size designation S/S (Small Size) also present. Height approximately 4 inches (10.25 cm); diameter approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm).

Historical Context
Shorter & Son Ltd was a Staffordshire pottery founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1878, becoming one of the most prolific producers of novelty and character wares in mid-twentieth-century England. The firm is particularly celebrated for its range of figural character jugs and Toby mugs, produced in a distinctive hand-painted style that distinguished it from the more clinical output of larger Potteries rivals.
The Father Neptune character jug was one of Shorter & Son's most enduring and recognisable designs, produced in multiple sizes — from large (approximately 25 cm) down to the small size (S/S) represented here. The backstamp reading Shorter & Son Ltd (as opposed to the earlier Shorter & Son or the plain Shorter England mark) firmly dates this piece to the period 1940–1964, the latter date marking the closure of the independent Shorter & Son business following its absorption into the S. Fielding & Co. (Crown Devon) group.
The Father Neptune subject — bearded sea king, marine crown, and seahorse handle — was particularly well suited to the Shorter aesthetic, allowing the factory's decorators full scope for expressive, hand-applied colour. These small-size mugs were produced in considerable numbers but are now increasingly sought after by collectors of mid-century British pottery novelty wares, particularly those with strong colour retention.

~ Dimensions ~

The mug has a height of 4 inches (10.25cm) & a diameter of 3 inches (7.5cm).

~ Condition ~

The mug presents in very good condition for its age, with excellent colour saturation throughout.

Glaze: Good overall glaze coverage; minor age-appropriate surface crazing visible on close inspection, consistent with mid-century Staffordshire earthenware production.
Decoration: The overglaze hand-painted enamels retain strong colour across the face, crown, beard, and seahorse handle. No significant wear or rubbing to the decoration.
Crown and marine motifs: The purple crown with its fish and starfish details is well-preserved, with good definition to the relief modelling and paint application on both the front and reverse.
Seahorse handle: Intact and firmly attached; colours well-retained in green and muted earth tones.
Rim: The wavy, irregular rim — characteristic of the design — is intact with no chips or losses.
Interior (Image 5): Shows age-related dirt accumulation at the base of the well, consistent with use and age. No cracks or crazing to the interior glaze.
Base (Image 6): The backstamp is clear and legible; minor surface dirt around the unglazed foot rim, age-appropriate.
No chips, cracks, hairlines, or evidence of restoration are apparent from examination of the photographs. Buyers are encouraged to review all images carefully prior to purchase.
