Description

*Swedish, M1867 Socket Bayonet, for use on the 12.17mm. M1867 Remington rolling block rifle*

Socket bayonet for use on the 12.17 mm. m/1867 Remington rolling block military rifle. The Swedish-made bayonets were all steel. Featuring a 50cm cruciform blade with sharp point attached to a socket with a central locking ring. The inspector marks on the elbow are indistinct, the obverse side looks like serial number 1022. 556mm overall length, 493mm blade, 65mm socket.

The Austro-Prussian War in 1866 fueled arms development in Europe. Just two months after the war’s end in October 1866, the united Kingdoms of Norway and Sweden formed a joint Swedish-Norwegian Ordnance Commission. Their main task was to explore and adopt a new breechloading firearm system for the Kingdom. In the spring of 1867, the Commission recommended the Remington pattern rolling-block metallic cartridge rifle, which was approved by King Charles XV on May 8, 1867. This choice was influenced by the availability of the 12.17 x 44R cartridge, as the Swedish army already possessed a significant number of rifles in 12.17mm that could be converted to rolling block rifles. Sweden produced around 200,000 to 220,000 military rifles and 7,000 military carbines using the m/1867 action. They also acquired 10,000 complete rifles and 20,000 actions from Remington in the United States.

M1867 bayonets were then produced in significant quantities by both Husqvarna and Carl Gustaf Stad, as noted by Per Holmback, an authority on Scandinavian bayonets.

*Condition*
This socket bayonet is in excellent condition given its age. The markings are indistinct and their is some discolouration. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
