Description

*Swedish, Dated 1955, Swedish Army M39 Wool Field Jacket, Tre Kronor Buttons, Derber Maker, Size 104*

An original Swedish Army wool field jacket dating to 1955, produced in the classic grey-green wool associated with Swedish military uniforms of the mid-20th century. The jacket follows the well-known Swedish M/39 style field tunic design, later updated and commonly referred to as the M/39-58 pattern, characterised by its durable wool construction, four front pockets, and distinctive Swedish “Tre Kronor” (Three Crowns) military buttons.

The jacket retains its original pressed buttons, each bearing the Swedish Three Crowns national emblem. This emblem has long been used as the official symbol of the Swedish state and appears on Swedish military equipment and uniforms to denote government issue. The buttons remain consistent across the garment, confirming the piece as a genuine military example rather than a civilian copy.

Internally the garment retains a manufacturer label for Derber, a contractor known for producing Swedish military clothing during the Cold War period. Swedish military uniforms were produced by a network of civilian textile contractors working under government specification, and labels such as this help confirm period manufacture and supply to the Swedish armed forces. Also present inside the jacket is the typical Tre Kronor crown property stamp, together with the date 1955 and size marking 104, indicating official Swedish Army issue and acceptance into service.

The jacket follows the traditional Swedish field uniform layout with two pleated chest pockets and two larger lower pockets with pointed flaps, designed to carry field equipment and personal items. The rear retains the simple straight seam typical of the pattern, while the interior shows the reinforcement panels often found in Swedish wool field garments to strengthen high-wear areas.

The collar originally carried branch or unit collar tabs, which have been removed, leaving the tunic otherwise clean and typical of many Swedish surplus examples that were later stripped of insignia when sold into civilian markets.

Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 47.5 cm. Sleeve length: 64.5 cm. Overall length (hem to top of collar): 85 cm.

History Note:
Sweden remained officially neutral during the Second World War but maintained a large and well-equipped defensive army throughout the conflict and into the Cold War period. The Swedish M/1939 field uniform system became the standard combat dress for Swedish soldiers and continued in use, with modifications, well into the post-war decades.

By the 1950s these wool uniforms remained widely issued for training and field service due to their durability and suitability for northern climates. Garments were manufactured by a number of Swedish contractors under military supervision, with acceptance confirmed by the Tre Kronor crown stamps seen inside this example.

*Condition*
Service-worn but great example. The wool shows general wear, light pilling and scattered small marks consistent with age and use. Collar tabs have been removed, leaving the collar plain. The original Three Crowns buttons remain present. The interior lining panels remain intact with the Derber manufacturer label visible together with the Tre Kronor acceptance stamp dated 1955 and size 104. Overall a genuine period Swedish military jacket with honest service wear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
