Description

*Swedish, WW1 – Dated 1917,  M/1896 Carl Gustafs Mauser Rifle, Matching Nos, Old Spec Deactivated*

Serial No: HK 403100

A fine First World War–dated Swedish Model 1896 (m/96) Mauser long rifle, manufactured in 1917 at Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori, Eskilstuna. This example is deactivated to old specification, retaining full external originality and mechanical integrity; the bolt cocks and dry-fires. The rifle has matching-numbers throughout, including the bolt components, with repeated inspection crowns and part numbers or abbreviated serial “100” evident across the action and fittings.

Chambered for the 6.5×55 mm Swedish cartridge, the rifle displays the classic m/96 configuration: straight bolt handle, thumb-cut receiver, five-round internal magazine, and the original tangent rear sight graduated from 300 to 2,000 metres. The receiver ring bears the crisp arsenal legend and crown, dated 1917, with the serial HK 403100 ont he LHS. The stock shows a red-painted circular marking in the position normally occupied by the Swedish inspection disc, indicating a period armoury or service marking rather than a fitted brass disc.

Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 125 cm. Barrel length: 25.5 in (approx. 64.8 cm).

Historical Note:
Adopted in 1896, the Swedish Mauser family is renowned for exceptional metallurgy and accuracy. Swedish-made actions were produced using a high-grade alloy steel (nickel, copper, and vanadium), proofed to rigorous standards, and are noted for longevity and consistency. Unlike later Model 98 Mausers, the m/96 is a pre-98 system with cock-on-closing, sharing this trait with the contemporary Lee-Enfield.

This rifle’s “HK” inspector’s initials correspond to Helge Gustaf Ludvig Kolthoff, chief weapons inspector at Carl Gustafs from 1912 to 1923, confirming acceptance during his tenure. Dated 1917, it represents wartime production for a neutral nation that nonetheless maintained a modern, well-equipped army. The 6.5×55 mm cartridge’s mild recoil and excellent ballistic performance contributed to the platform’s enduring reputation in military, target, and sporting use.

*Condition*
Overall very good for age. Metal surfaces show an honest service patina with light handling marks; markings remain clear and legible. Woodwork is sound with expected minor knocks and abrasions. Deactivation has been carried out to old specification without detracting from external appearance. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

This rifle is accompanied by its original Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House certificate, dated 26th November 1985, confirming UK deactivation to the then-current specification.
