Description

*Swiss, c.1918-1933, Schmidt–Rubin M1918 Bayonet and Scabbard – Waffenfabrik Neuhausen*

An excellent original Swiss Dolchbajonett Modell 1918 (dagger bayonet) by Waffenfabrik Neuhausen, serial numbered 149340, complete with its original blackened steel scabbard and leather belt loop. The double-edged blade retains a bright finish with light age speckling and clear WAFFENFABRIK NEUHAUSEN markings at the ricasso. The crossguard bears the serial number, while the scabbard filial shows the small stamped Swiss cross inspection mark. Wooden grips are firmly riveted and well preserved, showing only light service wear. The scabbard retains much of its factory black finish with some rubbing and age toning, and the original leather belt strap remains attached, with the typical punched hole where it was once adjusted to a frog. Press stud functions well, and the bayonet locks and releases correctly.

Measurements: Blade length 29.9 cm (11.8 in). Overall length 43 cm (17 in). Muzzle ring diameter 14 mm.

Historical Note:
Although Switzerland remained neutral during the First World War, its long-standing policy of armed neutrality required full military readiness at all times. During 1914–1918, the Swiss Army mobilised to guard its borders and maintain sovereignty against potential incursions by either side. To ensure national preparedness, arms production continued steadily, and by the late war period the new M1918 bayonet was introduced for issue with the 7.5 mm Schmidt–Rubin service rifles - the M1911 carbine and M1931 Short Rifle (K31). Manufactured at Waffenfabrik Neuhausen, these finely made double-edged dagger bayonets reflected Switzerland’s exceptional precision engineering and commitment to self-defence. According to serial number data, Waffenfabrik Neuhausen produced the M1918 bayonet until approximately 1933. The serial number was applied only when the bayonet was paired with a rifle. The M1911 Carbine with serial number 140144 was produced in 1926. The M1918 later remained in service with the K31 short rifle well into the 20th century, its design combining strength, balance, and elegant simplicity.

*Condition*
The bayonet remains in very good, original condition with attractive patina throughout. The blade retains its polish with only light speckling and minor surface oxidation, free from nicks or sharpening. Markings are clear and well defined. The hilt components show light silver-grey patination with intact wood grips. The scabbard is complete, showing age-related rubbing to the blackened finish and minor surface wear, with the leather loop aged but intact and still firmly attached. Mechanically sound, with a crisp release catch and solid fit between bayonet and scabbard. An honest, well-preserved example of the Swiss M1918 bayonet — a classic of European precision arms manufacture. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
