*Swiss, c.1920s, Thorens “Single-Claw” Patent Petrol Pocket Lighter with Suspension Ring*
A genuine early 20th century Swiss-made Thorens petrol pocket lighter dating to the early interwar period and retaining its distinctive semi-automatic “single-claw” ignition mechanism together with original suspension ring for attachment to a gentleman’s watch chain or lady’s chatelaine. Compact and elegantly engineered, the lighter is of slim rectangular form with rounded corners and a spring-assisted hinged lid opening to reveal the wick tube and geared striker assembly.
The underside is clearly marked “THORENS SWISS MADE” together with “BRITISH PATENT No 137508,” corresponding to the original British patent granted to Hermann Thorens on 29 January 1920. The patent relates to Thorens’ innovative semi-automatic claw-operated striker system, one of the company’s earliest and most commercially successful lighter mechanisms. Examples bearing British patent markings were manufactured for export into the British market during the early interwar years.
Constructed in plated metal with brass suspension loop fittings, the lighter demonstrates the precision engineering standards for which Thorens became internationally respected. Founded in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland in 1883, Hermann Thorens SA originally specialised in finely engineered mechanical music boxes, phonographs, and clockwork devices before expanding into luxury ignition tools and tobacciana during the early 20th century. Their patented petrol lighters are now highly collectible and are often grouped alongside early Dunhill and other premium continental makers.
Approx. Measurements – Height: 5.9 cm. Width: 3.7 cm. Depth: 0.8 cm.
*Condition*
The lighter shows honest age-related wear including surface scratches, rubbing, and areas of tarnishing consistent with prolonged pocket use. Internal geared striker and wick assembly remain present and appear substantially complete. Untested and sold as a collectible antique lighter only. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
