*U.S., WW2, Thompson Submachine Gun 30-Round Magazine, by The Seymour Products Co., with Four Inert .45 ACP Cartridges*
An original World War II U.S. Thompson submachine gun 30-round detachable box magazine, manufactured by The Seymour Products Co., Seymour, Connecticut, one of the principal wartime contractors producing magazines for the Thompson M1928A1 and M1/M1A1 submachine guns under U.S. Ordnance contracts.
Manufactured from pressed steel, the magazine retains the correct wartime profile with its original blued finish showing honest service wear, handling marks and scattered areas of finish loss consistent with age and military use. The maker's mark remains clearly legible on the body.
The magazine retains the characteristic six witness holes along one side of the body, allowing the remaining ammunition to be viewed at approximately five-round intervals. These witness holes are a defining feature of the wartime 30-round Thompson magazine, indicating capacities of approximately 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 rounds.
Approx. Measurements – Magazine length: approx. 26cm (10¼in).
History Note:
The Thompson submachine gun became one of the most recognisable Allied firearms of the Second World War, serving extensively with U.S. Army and Marine Corps units, British and Commonwealth forces, Commandos, airborne troops, resistance movements and numerous Allied special operations organisations.
While the original Thompson was issued with a 20-round box magazine and, on some early models, the famous drum magazine, operational experience quickly demonstrated the advantages of the higher-capacity 30-round box magazine. Introduced during the war, it provided a significant increase in firepower while remaining lighter, more reliable and considerably more practical than the drum magazine. It became the standard magazine for the M1 and M1A1 Thompson and was also widely used with the earlier M1928A1.
The Seymour Products Company of Seymour, Connecticut, was among the principal wartime manufacturers supplying Thompson magazines to the U.S. military. Original Seymour-marked magazines remain highly sought after by collectors restoring or displaying original World War II Thompson submachine guns and associated equipment.
Inert Ammunition:
The magazine retains four inert .45 ACP display cartridges within the feed stack. Three are genuine U.S. World War II military surplus rounds bearing the FA 42 headstamp, identifying manufacture by Frankford Arsenal in 1942. The fourth is a post-war HOWITZER .45 ACP commercial cartridge manufactured by Starline and sold under the Howitzer brand, representing a later display addition. All four cartridges are inert and intended for display purposes only.
*Condition*
Good original condition with honest service wear throughout. The magazine body remains structurally sound with no obvious dents or distortion. The Seymour manufacturer's markings remain clear and legible. The original finish exhibits expected handling wear, scratches, edge rubbing and scattered areas of light oxidation consistent with military service and long-term storage. The six witness holes are clean and well defined, and the magazine retains the four inert display cartridges as described. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report.
