An original American Civil War-period United States Model 1840 Musician’s Sword manufactured by the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and dated 1864.

These regulation swords were issued to Union Army musicians, drummers, fifers, and buglers serving within infantry regiments during the American Civil War. The pattern is instantly recognisable by its elegant Roman-style form and simplified brass hilt lacking the clamshell guards found on the NCO variant.

The sword retains its correct straight double-edged spear-point blade with narrow central fullers running along both faces. The brass hilt comprises a plain crossguard with integrated D-shaped knuckle bow terminating in a downward quillon, together with the ribbed cast grip and rounded pommel characteristic of the regulation Model 1840 Musician’s pattern.

The obverse ricasso retains the classic Ames parchment scroll trademark: "AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS". The reverse ricasso is crisply stamped: "US / F / 1864". The “F” inspection mark is attributable to Henry F. Fowler, a Federal ordnance inspector associated with Ames wartime contracts during the Civil War.

Particularly interesting is a lightly incised “A.H.K” marking to the inside of the brass knuckle bow. Cross-referencing the sword against John H. Thillmann’s standard reference Civil War Army Swords: A Study of United States Army Swords from 1832 through 1865 places the piece within documented Ames wartime inspection chronology. The marking is consistent with known Civil War-era Ames inspection initials attributed to Albert H. Kirkham, active on Ames contracts during the early 1860s, although the exact application of the mark cannot be conclusively proven.

History Note:
The US Model 1840 Musician’s Sword was adopted by the United States War Department for use by regimental field musicians within infantry formations. Inspired by earlier French infantry sidearms of the early 19th century, the design provided a lightweight and practical sword suitable for marching and field service duties. During the Civil War, musicians played an important battlefield role relaying commands, regulating troop manoeuvres, and transmitting bugle and drum signals during combat operations. Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, became the principal supplier of military swords and edged weapons to Union forces during the conflict and remains one of the most respected names in American military sword production.

*Condition*
A solid untouched Civil War-period example retaining an attractive aged appearance throughout. The brass hilt displays a warm golden patina with scattered handling wear, darker age staining, and areas of reddish surface oxidation deposits around the knuckle bow. The lightly incised “A.H.K” marking remains visible internally to the guard. The blade remains straight and structurally sound, retaining areas of original bright finish together with grey clouding, scattered oxidation speckling, staining, and minor pinprick surface pitting consistent with age and storage. Both the Ames scroll trademark and the Federal inspection marks remain crisp, clear, and deeply struck. The hilt assembly remains tight overall with no major looseness noted. No scabbard present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
