~ Victorian Bronze Staffordshire Bull Terrier Dog By Charles Valton ~
A wonderfully evocative bronze casting of a dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier to the best of my knowledge, by Charles Valton.
The piece dates to the late Victorian period,
This bronze depicts the dog stood on its hind legs with front paws on a fence and an inquisitive, maybe angry look upon its face.
The bronze bears the signature of the artist ‘C. Valton’.
It is set on a marble base with green baize underside.
~ Dimensions ~
The base measures 25cm (9 ¾ inches) by 16.5cm (6 ½ inches).
The bronze on it base has a height of 33cm (13 inches).
The piece weighs 6.2 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in a wonderful condition with only light signs of wear.
~ C. Valton ~
Charles Valton was a French sculptor known for his works created in the animalier style, a 19th-century movement which depicted animals in
active poses with realistic anatomy.
Born in1851 in Pau, France, Valton grew up in the French capitol and spent much of his time at the Jardin des Plantes botanical garden. He also
studied with two artists who served as the directors of the Parisian zoological garden.
He produced numerous small-scale models of African and Indian wildlife, as well as dogs, often using granite or white marble as the base for the
bronze casts around the animal to depict stone or snow.
Valton’s work was exhibited regularly in the Paris Salons between 1868 and 1914.
The artist died in 1918 in Paris, France.
