~ Victorian North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry Dress Helmet ~
A North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry Victorian Officer’s 1847 “Albert” pattern helmet.
A fine and scarce example worn by the Regiment circa 1854-1901. Silvered skull decorated with gilt metal floral leaf design.
The helmet plate bearing a brass title strap inscribed “The North Somerset” with an entwined VR cypher to the centre. Rose head bosses support a brass chin chain with velvet backing.
The plume holder of leaf design supports a black flowing horsehair plume with a rose head boss
The interior retains its leather lining.
It also has a brass spine running down the rear of the helmet and a brass trim around the front peak.
There is green leather under the front peak and black leather under the rear one.
~ Dimensions ~
The helmet is 8 ½ inches (22 cm) tall (without the spike) and 11 inches (28.5 cm) tall (with the spike). It has a depth of 11 inches (28 cm), a width of 7 inches (17.5 cm) & weighs 1.10Kg.
~ Condition ~
There is some minor age wear to the metal and leather.
Overall, this piece is in generally good condition for its age. The skull has numerous dings etc., please refer to the images. One of the bosses is a mismatched replacement.
