Description

*Victorian Walking Stick with Coquilla Nut Head Carved as a Man’s Face, Bamboo Shaft, Metal Collar & Ferrule, L 89cm*

A characterful antique walking stick with finely carved coquilla nut head, blending novelty, craftsmanship, and curiosity appeal. This is an unusual antique walking stick, the handle carved from a polished coquilla nut into the form of a man’s expressive head. The carving captures strong features with deeply incised lines to the brow and cheeks, lending a striking characterful appearance. The nut is mounted on a stained bamboo shaft via a plain metal collar, and the stick terminates in a metal ferrule. Length 89cm.

Historical Note:
Coquilla nuts, the hard-shelled fruit of the Brazilian Attalea funifera palm, became a popular carving material in the 18th and 19th centuries due to their density and ability to take fine detail. They were used to create netsuke-style miniatures, snuff boxes, and novelty cane handles. Walking sticks with figural nut carvings were fashionable curiosities among collectors and travellers in the Victorian period, often produced by European carvers inspired by exotic or grotesque styles.

*Condition*
The coquilla nut handle displays age-related surface cracks consistent with the material, but remains intact and stable. The carving is well-preserved with good definition to the features, though some wear is visible. The bamboo shaft shows scuffing, rubbing, and small surface losses to the stained finish, commensurate with age and use. Metal collar and ferrule are tarnished with surface marks. Overall a good and original example with strong visual appeal. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
