The shell case is engraved with the date 1919 and “Bailleul” over a shield surrounded by wreaths.
The base is engraved to the base HL 87 and 1917.
~ Bailleul ~
Bailleul (Belle in Dutch) is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It is located in French Flanders, 3 km (2 mi) from the Belgian border.
With a population over just over 13000 inhabitants in 1914, Bailleul became an important centre behind British lines once the front settled down a few miles east of the town in October 1914.
The Germans captured it ‘Operation Georgette’, the Battle of the Lys in April 1918. Bailleul was utterly devastated by artillery fire. It was recaptured later in the year (late August/early September).
