Description

*WW1, American Trench Art Eagle Ornament from WWI German Shell Case*

A striking piece of American WWI trench art, made from a spent German 120mm artillery shell case manufactured at Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe and dated February 1916. The casing measures approximately 12cm in diameter and has been expertly repurposed into a four-legged desk or table ornament, standing approx 21cm tall.

The brass base is engraved: “FEB. 1916 / (Patronen) FABRIK (is faintly discernible) KARLSRUHE / Sp255” confirming manufacture during the First World War. “Sp255” refers to the Spandau control mark, applied by inspectors overseeing quality control at the Karlsruhe munitions works.

Crowning the piece is a bold U.S. Federal-style eagle cast in bronze or copper, with outstretched wings and strong feather detailing. Below it are two original U.S. Army Great Seal uniform buttons, each 2.5cm in diameter and reverse-marked “Buttons Limited Birmingham” — a British firm contracted to supply insignia to American forces during WWI.

Historical Context
This unique item was almost certainly crafted as a souvenir by or for a U.S. serviceman using captured or salvaged German materials. The use of a Karlsruhe-marked shell, U.S. eagle iconography, and authentic American uniform buttons suggests a deliberate blending of opposing symbols — a hallmark of meaningful trench art and postwar occupation souvenirs. The Federal eagle style and button type confirm American origin, while the shell itself is likely a battlefield find.

*Condition*
Good display condition. Brass shell retains a warm, even patina with minor wear and surface marks from age. The eagle is securely affixed and shows fine detail. Buttons are firmly attached and well-preserved. Underside shows oxidation consistent with age. Please refer to photographs as part of the condition report.
