Description

*WW1 French Flare Pistol by Chobert"

The Chobert flare pistol was made in France by the Chobert company, established in 1873. The pistol was designed to shoot flares, which were used to signal distress, mark locations, or provide illumination. Flare pistols were commonly used by military personnel, sailors, and fishermen, as well as by civilians in emergency situations.

The bottom of frame serial number is 9649. F211 is engraved on the trigger and inside the flare cartridge. There is an engraved floral design associated with Chobert on the metal grip and inside the trigger mechansism next to a number 8. The name 'Depose' is on the top of the receiver with 'Chobert - Paris' on one side and '16 Rue Lafayette' on the other. Proof marks including the crossed swords are present. "Depose" is a French term that means "patent" or "patent pending," and was often used on French firearms to indicate that the design of the weapon had been registered with the French government. The fact that the address is included in the markings suggests that the flare pistol was manufactured prior to World War I, as many of the buildings on Rue Lafayette were destroyed during the war.

Overall length 19.4cm

~ Condition ~
This flare gun cocks and dry fires and is in great condition with some minor surface dents and scratches. It has a great overall finish for its age and use. Please see photographs as they form part of the condition report.
