The WW1 German Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse, or EK2) was reinstituted on August 5, 1914, by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Awarded strictly for individual bravery, it is a three-piece construction medal featuring a blackened iron core, silver-plated frame, and a suspension loop.
