*GSTP, Military Issue, WW2, Cream-faced, Pocket Watch, Resold by Bravingtons, London*
An unsigned British Military pocket watch, resold by Bravingtons, London. A white metal nickel open face case which has a snap on back and bezel. A cream enamel dial with Arabic numerals and much faded lumen except on the hands. The back has “GS/TP”, (GS/TP stands for General Services Timepiece/Temporary Pattern, which indicates that the watch was purchased by the British government for the armed forces 1939-1945) followed by the British Broad Arrow, struck through with an S which means that it was sold out of service, this is followed by the army stores numbers 025427 and then Bravingtons, London – who would have been the resellers of the watch. 5cm diameter.
This pocket watch would have been issued to a serving officer hence the war arrow and stores number, the number would have been entered into their pay packet and if it wasn’t returned their pay slips would have been docked. From 1946-48 the Ministry of Supply sold off surplus watches and clocks to an estimated value exceeding £2.000.000. One of the subsequent resellers would have been the High Street jewellers, ‘Bravingtons London’. Bravingtons were a high-end jeweller, originating in King’s Cross, London in 1927. There was one in every city and several in London, including Pentonville Road, the Strand and Charing Cross. They sold clocks and watches including their own brands of Swiss supplied watches.
