This is a rare example of an RAF Aircrew Escape Axe.
It was made by the ELWELL company, renowned for making all types of edge tools.
This RAF Escape Axe was used by air crew as an aid to escaping a stricken aircraft and were used in Wellington Bombers and Spitfires, along with many other service aircraft.
The axe head markings are very feint as the head has lost it surface finish somewhat We can see the bunny ear crown and the A from the AM below. The marking above is now indistinct but the handle still bears the stamps:- TESTED 20,000 VOLTS and on the opposite side PATENT No 515767
*Condition*
The head is pitted and has nicks in it.
The handle is intact but the rubber has some marks from use.
A lump has been taken off the base of the handle at an angle, it seems to have seen some trauma in its life.
Please see all of the photos as they form part of the item description.
