*WW2, German, GM30 Gas Mask, in 1943 4th model Waterproof Cannister*
WW2 German Gas Mask or Gasschutzmaske (Gas protection mask) in a metal Waterproof Cannister , this is a fine example of the standard pattern gas mask as issued to the German Wehrmachtn, its original green factory paint.
Cannister – 4th Model:
This canister, marked with makers mark “hnz” – likely to be code for Grosskopf, Ludwig & Co., Metallwarenfabrik, Jimenau i/Thuer and the date “1943,” features a fixed box on the lid for anti-fog inserts (not included). The front catch is labeled “frn43,” and the number “250” is painted in white near the opening. It contains a cleaning cloth and retaining spring at the bottom and is marked with an impressed “D” for Dicht meaning watertight. The cannister measures 27.5cm in height and 12cm in diameter.
Gas Mask GM30 Variant 3:
The GM30 gas mask uses a 5-point head harness and a neck strap made of cloth and elasticated by steel springs. Its face-piece is constructed from canvas material with a rubber coating, covered by thin canvas and an even thinner rubber inner layer. Brass assemblies hold cellulose eyepieces that can be easily replaced. The valve housing is made of aluminum, with a 40mm DIN intake at the front and a glimmer-type exhale valve at the back.
The first model had a simple valve house, while the second, the most well-known, had both inhale and exhale on one flat surface. This change was made to prevent quick soiling of the valve and to protect soldiers’ front teeth during falls. Some masks received rubber protectors and pre-chamber lids during military modernization, but not all civilian masks were modified, leading to rare variants. The third variant features a valve housing made from a single mold.
This gas mask has the size number ‘2’ to snout. It is fitted with an Fe41 filter. Stamped on the outside of the filter with an H in a circle and a 38 in a circle. Inside the filter a circle with two dots and two legs is embossed – the logo for the manufacturer ‘Chlora’. Around the outside of the filter: embossed “Fe41”, a black stamped “Triangle P” followed by embossed “Fe” (for ferrum (iron)), black stamped “C11”, black stamped “0772”, black stamped “11”. A similar black triangle is stamped inside the gas mask, black stamped number “1520”. On the outer inside edge: black stamped “938”, by the chin strap black stamped no “92”. The lenses are original and dated “1940 G.G.F. Jnnenseite 02415”. Both long & short carrying straps are totally original to the set.
*Condition*
Overall condition excellent with some general age rust to lid & body. This is an excellent and rare example of the GM30 that were then superseded by the GM38. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
