~ 1890 Queen Victoria Maundy Money Coin Set 1d, 2d, 3d & 4d ~
A full set of four Queen Victoria Maundy Money coins dated for 1890.
Every year since 1699 on Maundy Thursday (the day before Good Friday), a religious service known as Royal Maundy has been held in the Church of England. At the service the British monarch or a royal official ceremonially distributes small silver coins known as ‘Maundy money’ as symbolic alms to elderly recipients.
Maundy money is struck in denominations of one penny, two pence, three pence, and four pence. Until the 18th century the coins given were from the circulating coinage, and it was not until the latter half of the century that the four Maundy coins developed as distinct, non-circulating pieces.
The coins feature the image of the reigning monarch to the obverse and a crowned numeral enclosed by a wreath to the reverse.
This set dates from 1890 and therefore features the image of Queen Victoria.
The set includes all four coins and comes in a small, circular card case which looks to be of the same period as the coins.

The set in case weighs 5.6g.
