~ US Civil War M1861 Springfield P53 Enfield “Special Model Rifle-musket” 1861 .58” Dated 1864 and Bayonet ~
A US Civil War model, one of circa 50,000 special models delivered to the US Government by Colt through his associate LG & Y (Lamson Goodnow & Yale) between Sept 1862 and Dec 28, 1864.
With an overall length 4ft and 8 inches (142 cm) the rifled musket is fitted with a 2 position 3 range leaf rear sight.
Slightly different markings are found for each year of production. This is a Type 3 (1864) and carries all relevant stamps.
On the flat of stock opposite the lock a clear inspection cartouche is present with initials probably HEV (Henry E. Valentine, recorded as a US inspector in 1862).
No other markings are visible.
The grey finish metalwork still bears markings on the barrel and lock reading 1864.
‘U.S. over LG & Y over Windsor Vt’ can be seen on a closer look on the lock plate.
The piece comes with its original screws and washers, original butt plate, trigger guard, bands and nose cap.
The butt tang is marked “US” and the bands are marked U.
The gun retains its original steel, tulip-tipped, ramrod in good condition.
There are no additional marks on the underside suggesting capture and re-use by the Confederates.
Comes with its original 21-inch bayonet in good condition with similar grey metal patina to the rifle.
The bayonet is prominently marked US at the base of the blade.
A very good, Special Model 1861 contract rifle musket by L.G. & Y The gun was purchased in Bristol in 1997 from the widow of a French national. The gun had reputedly been in her husband’s family for as long as the family could be remembered.
