The German occupation of Belgium during World War II commenced on May 28, 1940, following the surrender of the Belgian army to German forces. This occupation persisted until Belgium’s liberation by the Western Allies between September 1944 and February 1945. Under German rule, a military administration governed Belgium, with the Wehrmacht directly overseeing the territory. Thousands of Belgian soldiers were captured and held as prisoners of war until 1945. The German administration aimed to maintain order while extracting resources for the war effort, and collaboration with the Belgian civil service facilitated these objectives. From 1944, the SS and Nazi Party gained increased control in Belgium, especially after the military government was replaced by a Nazi civil administration in July—the Reichskommissariat Belgien-Nordfrankreich. In September 1944, Allied forces liberated Belgium, and by February 1945, the country was declared fully liberated.
